Apple introduced the iPad Mini finally. The device features a 7.89-inch display with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels, which is the same with iPad 2. The size of the iPad Mini is smaller while the weight is only 0.68 pounds and it’s 7.2 millimeters thin. For the hardware performance, the iPad Mini has a dual-core A5 processor, a Facetime HD camera on the front and a 5-megapixel camera on the rear, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity, and 4G LTE cellular connectivity in some models. And the iPad mini still offers up to 10 hours of battery life. From the specifications, iPad Mini is a “new” iPad with better mobility than ever. So what the iPad Mini can bring something good to the developers?
First , the iPad Mini just provides a great balance between gaming experience and mobility. Because the weight of the iPad Mini is really light so that I can hold it and play games for a long time. And in the App Store, there are already 275,000 apps just for iPad. Because the iPad Mini make gamers more comfortable to play and carry with man-bag, it seems to help to increase a broader audience. More users mean that the developers can increase the revenue.
Eric Tilenius, entrepreneur-in-residence at Scale Venture Partners and a former Zynga general manager said, “With full iPad resolution, full iOS 6 functionality, and a reasonably fast processor in a super light, super portable, one-hand format for a very reasonable price, iPad mini stands to double the size of the iPad gaming market over the next year.”
Steve Allison, senior vice president at game publisher Telltale Games, said, ““Since it’s effectively an iPad 2 under the hood the iPad Mini represents the first touch screen tablet in the 7-inch range that can actually run 3D games with any true competency – it should push user behavior to playing games ahead of e-reading and movie watching on these tablets for the first time. With the release of the iPad Mini Apple firmly keeps its lead as the premier handheld gaming platform.”
Second, because of the size and the weight, the iPad Mini is also good for reading. I can’t hold iPad 3 for hours. And for kids, iPad Mini will be a better reader for them. People look to spend more time to consume the contents in the iPad. So this is also a good trend for content-oriented application developers like children’s book applications.
Third, with the release of iPad Mini, I think Apple will gain more market shares in the education area. Because now the iPad Mini is lighter, thinner and more affordable for students. And Apple also updated its iBook Author application for Mac yesterday by adding new templates and the ability for authors to use their own fonts and add mathematical expressions and multi-touch widgets. This will also help Apple to gain users in the education area, which is also a good news for developers.
